Now that the leaves have mostly fallen off the trees and the vibrant colors of fall are gone, the outside world may seem bleak and dreary. The days are shorter, the nights are longer, and barren and brown are the new norms. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Spruce up your life by bringing summer indoors. Winter here in Sioux Falls is the perfect time to focus on the landscape of the inside of your home. What better way to do that than with indoor vegetation. Plants are notorious for bringing light into darkness and breathing life into a room.
So what are some of the easiest indoor houseplants to care for? Eagle Lawn and Landscape have developed a list of five common yet easy-to-maintain household greenery you can start growing and enjoying today.
Jade Plant
One of the easiest yet attractive houseplants is the Jade plant. This exotic-looking vegetation has thick, full leaves with a smooth, waxy look. The Jade plant can live up to 70 or 80 years old, making it a great plant to live and grow with your family. It is actually considered a symbol of good luck, but luck is not needed to care for this dark evergreen room decorator. Place the jade plant in a well-lit room that receives a lot of sunlight and water it as required. Jade plants can go several weeks without water but don’t allow it to dry out completely. If it starts to get too big, plant it in a larger pot to give it more room to grow.
The ZZ Plant
Are you the type of person who can’t have a plant in your Sioux Falls home or office because you never remember to water it or it doesn’t get enough sun? Well, then the ZZ plant is right for you. This neglect-proof plant is drought tolerant, accepts low-light conditions, and, better yet, acts as an air purifier. According to NASA research, this hardy plant helps rid your space of certain toxins. Like the jade plant, it has thick, waxy leaves that are smooth to the touch, making it look more like a fake plant than natural. There is one downfall to the ZZ plant; however, it is poisonous if eaten. Therefore, it may not be the best plant to have around pets or small children, but it is perfect for the office or single loaner!
Snake Plant
If you’re looking for a plant that’s almost impossible to kill, you want a snake plant. A snake plant can go for weeks at a time without water and requires very little sunlight. Their long, slender green leaves allow them to store water for long periods. There are approximately 70 different species of snake plants, and they attract few insects. Like the ZZ plant, NASA research shows snake plants can act as air purifiers helping to keep your Sioux Falls home free of toxins. Place them in a spot that receives only indirect sunlight and don’t overwater them. In fact, it’s better to let them dry out in between watering.
Spider Plant
Called a spider plant because of the way its leaves spread out in growth and its brow tips which dangle from the mother plant like spiders on a web. This plant can grow in a wide range of conditions and suffers from few problems. It comes in several varieties ranging from solid green leaves to shades of white or cream stripes down the middle. To care for a spider plant, simply place it in a spot that receives medium to bright light and remember to water it but not too much. Spider plants can also benefit from occasional trimming; however, it is not necessary for their survival.
Aloe Plant
Decorate your house while also creating your very own medicine cabinet. The aloe plant makes number five on our list, and while it is a beneficial plant full of healthy benefits, it is also quite attractive. The juices from an aloe plant can be used as a skin moisturizer and to heal minor cuts and sunburn. The aloe plant is part of the succulent family and requires little water and bright indirect sunlight. It has thick, dark green leaves that contain the watery gel used to help skin irritations. Place aloe plants near a window with temperatures around 70 degrees and only water when the two inches of soil is dry.
